SATURDAY, JULY 13

Garden City Farmer’s Market: Peruse a little bit of everything, including fresh fruits and vegetables, hand-crafted items and more, at this weekly summer market, open 7 a.m. to noon on Saturdays through Sept. 28 at the parking lot of Westlake Ace Hardware, 1210 Fleming St.

Stuff the Bus: Help local agencies collect and fill over 1,000 backpacks. Locals can drop off student’s backpacks and various school supplies from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m at school buses parked in front of Target, both Walmarts and both Dillon’s, or any time at the Finney County United Way and Salvation Army offices.

Flea Market Festival at the Museum: Check out a mountain of antiques, collectibles, furniture, toys and more and the Finney County Historical Society’s annual flea market and patio sale, running from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Finney County Historical Museum. More than 60 vendors will be present to sell products and food.

Jungle Run Car Show: Come see local and area vehicles of all ages and styles from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the West Green of Lee Richardson Zoo during this annual Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo event. The event will run in tandem with the Flea Market Festival.

GCA Art Drop-In: Artist Jasper Johns will act as inspiration for this month’s Art Drop-In at Garden City Arts, where guests can venture through multiple, family-friendly art-making stations. The free session will be open to the public from 1 to 3 p.m. at Garden City Arts, 318 N Main St.

Adult Movie at the Library: Stop by the Finney County Public Library for an afternoon showing of James Cameron’s “Avatar” beginning at 2 p.m. The screening is free. Visit the library’s online calendar at www.finneylibrary.org to see a full schedule of its free events for all ages.

Oliver! at GCCC: Garden City will present a community production of the musical “Oliver!” at Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Center at the Garden City Community College campus, 801 Campus Drive. Tickets are $8 for kids 17 or younger, $10 for adults and $8 for seniors over 65 and the show begins at 2:30 p.m. The performance will take the place of the weekly outdoor concert and movie at Stevens Park.

Charlie Drussel Memorial Kruise-in: Check out locals’ vintage and new cars and motorcycles at this annual car show in memory of Charlie Drussel, hosted by Kansas Kruisers. The event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Garden City.

White Sands Pupfish v. the Wind: Watch Garden City’s home baseball team take on the White Sands Pupfish at 6:30 p.m. at the Clint Lightner Baseball Field. Admission is $3 for kids 12 and under and $6 for adults, available at the gate or at www.gardencitywind.com.

 

SUNDAY, JULY 14

White Sands Pupfish v. the Wind: Watch the Garden City Wind face off with the White Sands Pupfish from 1:35 to 4:35 p.m. at Clint Lightner Baseball Field. Admission is $3 for kids 12 and under and $6 for adults, available at the gate or at www.gardencitywind.com.

TUESDAY, JULY 16

Finney County Fair Clothing Judging: Ahead of next week’s fair, judges will choose the best from contestants’ clothing construction, buymanship and fiber arts categories from 8 a.m. to noon at the 4-H Building at the Finney County Fairgrounds.

GCA Canvas + Paint: Anyone 14 and older can drop into this step-by-step beginners class, where participants will learn to paint their rendition of the picture of the month. The class will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at Garden City Arts, 318 Main St., and is $25 ($20 for members). Contact Garden City Arts ahead of time to register.

GCA Chimeras: Young artists, ages 11 to 17, will morph together different animal features to create their own three-dimensional paper-mache chimeras at this three-day class at Garden City Arts. The class will run from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and is $15 ($10 for members). Register ahead of time at www.gardencityarts.org/kids-form.

Garden Valley Musical Program: Smokin’ Joe and Continental Carl will star in a musical variety program open to anyone at Garden Valley Retirement Village. The show begins at 7 p.m.

 

WEDNESDAY, JULY 17

GCA Monet’s Garden: Kids ages 8 to 10 will follow in Monet’s footsteps to create paper collages inspired by the work of the famous artist. Summer Reading Closing Ceremony: The Finney County Public Library will end its summer reading program with a bang (and awards and prizes). The grand prize drawings will be drawn at 10 a.m. and patrons can pick up their participation awards beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Water Day at the Library: Young kids and families can enjoy several free, outdoor water activities beginning at 10:30 a.m. just outside of the Finney County Public Library. Children 5 and under will play in the Nature Explore Center and children 6 and older on the library lawn. Southwest Regional Cancer Coalition: Regional stakeholders will meet for the new group’s July meeting from noon to 1 p.m. at St. Catherine Hospital.

Scott City’s Beefiesta Feed: Enjoy a slice of watermelon and plate of beef at this annual free beef barbeque feed, running in conjunction with the Scott County Free Fair. The feed will begin at 6 p.m. at the Scott County Fairgrounds.

FRIDAY, JULY 19

Finney County Fair Demonstrations and Illustrated Talks: Watch 4-H students walk an audience through various how-to’s at this contest leading up to next week’s Finney County Fair. Judging will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the 4-H Building at the Finney County Fairgrounds.

GCA Blushing Artiste: Enjoy some wine at this step-by-step group painting class at Garden City Arts, running from 7 to 9 p.m. Enroll ahead of time for $35 ($30 for members).

HPPR Living Room Concert: ”Folky-tonk” guitar and fiddle duo Pushing Chain will bring a collision of bluegrass, Americana, roots, folk and gospel music to High Plains Public Radio’s Living Room Concert series, beginning at 7 p.m. at HPPR Studios, 210 N. Summer Choir and Band Concert: The Garden City Choir and Municipal Band will join forces for an outdoor summer concert at 7:30 p.m. at Stevens Park, following rehearsals earlier in the week. Area singers of all ages are welcome to attend practices at 7 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, all at the First United Methodist Church of Garden City.

Finney County Fair Horse Show: Locals can register their horses in Finney County’s horse show, beginning at 8 a.m. in the grandstand arena at the Finney County Fairgrounds. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

GCA Mini & Me: Adults and children can paint a canvas together at these Garden City Arts classes, running from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 per pair ($25 for members) and children must be ages 5 and older. Contact Garden City Arts ahead of time to register.

Intro to Robotics Workshop: Innovators of all ages are invited to this Great Plains MakerSpace introduction to microcontrollers and automation, running from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Garden City Community College Gary Jarmer Annex. Attendees will learn how to wire and program circuits and sensors with an Arduino microcontroller to create an automated, self-watering plant system. Finney County Fair Pet Shows: 4-H kids and community members alike can show off their pets at the fair’s two pet shows, both located at the 4-H BuIlding at the Finney County Fairgrounds.
