The Garden City Community College Endowment Association selected Mateo Porras, of Ulysses, and Alaina Squire, of Syracuse, as new presidential ambassadors for the 2019-20 school year.
Each year, the association selects a limited number of presidential ambassadors from high school seniors intending to attend GCCC, granting them $1,500 annual scholarships for two years. The ambassadors help the president's and endowment offices with several events while attending GCCC, including the annual phonathon, scholarship auction and, this year, the Endowment Association's Centennial Gala in September.
Porras graduated from Ulysses High School this year with a 3.96 GPA. There, he participated in HALO, student council, S.A.D.D. National Honor Society, Interact, T-shirt class, FCCLA and yearbook. He was the senior class president, volunteered for the late start program, where students watch children whose parents work in the early morning, and earned the Kansas Honor Scholar Award and a silver medal in the FCCLA Star event. He plans to pursue an associate's degree in management marketing at GCCC before transferring to a four-year university to complete his bachelor's.
Squire recently graduated from Syracuse High School, where she maintained a 3.7 GPA and participated in cross country and track, FCLS, library leadership group and FFA. She stayed on the honor roll throughout high school and lettered in every sport she participated in. She plans to study criminology at GCCC before transferring to a four-year university.
