For the second year in a row, the American Red Cross is holding a Garden City blood drive in memory of Robert Becker, a longtime local blood donor who was killed in a motorcycle crash in October 2017.

The drive is scheduled for 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Community Congregational Church, 710 N. Third St.

Becker worked for 29 years as a zookeeper at Lee Richardson Zoo and served as chaplain for St. Catherine Hospice, Vets for Veterans, the American Legion and the Patriot Guard.

According to a news release from the Red Cross, Becker donated almost 16 gallons of blood during his lifetime. Last year’s Robert Becker memorial blood drive collected 107 donations.

The Red Cross is calling on donors to give blood to help meet the needs of patients in emergency situations. According to the National Trauma Institute, trauma accounts for about 41 million emergency department visits and 2 million hospital admissions each year.

Donors of all blood types are urged to donate. Make an appointment to donate by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting or calling 800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) and using sponsor code GardenCityKS.

Blood drives also are scheduled in these area communities:

• Dodge City: noon to 6 p.m. May 28 and 7:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 29 at the Senior Center, 2408 Central Ave.

• Cimarron: 2 to 6:30 p.m. June 4 at the Gray County Rec Center, 17002 US-50 highway.

Anyone who donates blood through the Red Cross now through June 10 will receive a $5 gift card via email. Restrictions apply.
