The Garden City High School drama department won two statewide Jester Awards — best ensemble or chorus and best lighting — for its spring musical “Evita.”

It was the first time the department won the best ensemble award, showing a standard of excellence for the entire cast, according to a press release from Garden City USD 457. The cast and crew were nominated for 11 Jester Awards this year, including best cameo performer, small ensemble, orchestra, musical direction, choreography and staging, technical achievement, costume design, scenic design, loppy display, lighting design and ensemble or chorus.

The department will host a free encore performance of its fall play, “Hamlet,” at 7 p.m. Friday, June 7, in the GCHS auditorium. The performance is the last time the community will be able to see the show before the cast and crew presents it on the main stage of the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Neb., later that month, the Super Bowl of high school musical theater, according to the release.
