Local attorney Ronald Evans, who has been serving as a public defender in the Western Regional Public Defender’s Office in Garden City since August 2015, died unexpectedly of natural causes Friday, according to a statement from the Public Defender’s Office.

Evans, 61, was a longtime public defender who previously held the position of chief of the Death Penalty Unit in Topeka. He most recently held the position of chief defender in the local public defender’s office, serving Garden City.

According to the public defender’s office, there are no services for Evans planned at this time.

With Evans’ death, there is only one attorney in the public defender’s office serving Garden City.

Pat Scalia, executive director of the Kansas State Board of Indigent Defense Services, which oversees public defender offices around the state, could not be reached for comment Wednesday about the process of replacing Evans and how his death would affect the staffing situation at the local office.

Evans is survived by a daughter and a son.
