Each year, more and more older adults are making a positive impact in and around Garden City, Finney County and southwest Kansas. As volunteers, employees, employers, educators, mentors, advocates, and more, they offer insight and experience that benefit the entire community.

That’s why Older Americans Month has been recognizing the contributions of this growing population for 56 years. Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation’s observance of Older Americans Month. The 2019 theme — Connect, Create, Contribute — encourages older adults and their communities to:

• connect with friends, family, and services that support participation;

• create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment;

• contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.

Connect, Create, and Contribute are right up our alley here at the Senior Center of Finney County. We connect each and every day with seniors in our community: for lunch, for activities, through Meals on Wheels and through our buses at Finney County Transit. We help create opportunities for seniors to be active, be it games, fellowship at meals, participating in nurse visits, reading at our library, or attending a dance. Our home visits through Meals on Wheels help us assure that our seniors are safe, enjoy a hot meal and are not lonely. We encourage seniors to contribute through volunteering, interacting with school kids when they visit us at the center and being active at our senior center and in our communities.

Communities that support and recognize older adults are stronger! Join us in strengthening our community — this May and throughout the year.
