Garden City Community College will hold its 99th commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. in the Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex.
Clara Jackson of Garden City and Raul Leyva-Montes of Syracuse will serve as the student speakers. They were selected out of a group of their peers after a written application and speech tryout process.
Jackson is a biology major with a 3.9 grade-point average who has been president of the Student Government Association, an officer and member of Phi Theta Kappa, a member of the Math and Science and Collegiate Quiz Bowl clubs, an advanced math tutor and a student employee at the Fous Math and Science Building as a biology work-study. She plans to transfer to Wichita State University, where she will major in biological/biomedical science with a minor in exercise science and psychology.
Leyva-Montes majored in pre-med with a 4.0 GPA and, while at GCCC, has been president of the Math and Science Club, an officer of Phi Theta Kappa, a Presidential Ambassador, Student Support Services member, Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation participant, and a Bridges program participant. He plans to transfer to Kansas State University, where he will major in biology and aid in undergraduate cancer research, before applying to physician assistant school.
