What: Come and have a glass of wine and light hors d’oeuvres while creating a painting that you can take home at the end of the night. Participants must be 21 or older.

When: 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday

State debate tournament

What: Garden City High School will be hosting the 109th Kansas State High School Activities Association state debate tournament for classes 5A and 6A. More than 300 students from around the state will be competing in the two-day event. It's just the third time for Garden City to host the event.

When: Friday and Saturday; teams will register at 10 a.m. Friday in the Commons Stage area before going to the auditorium for a general assembly meeting at 10:45 a.m. Competition will begin at 11:30 a.m. Rounds 2, 3 and 4 are scheduled for 1:45 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. All rounds are closed to the public. Saturday’s competition continues with an 8 a.m. start for Class 6A in round 5, followed by round 6 at 10:15 a.m. Class 5A will start round 5 at 10:15 a.m., followed by round 6 at 12:30 p.m. The rest of the bracketed tournament will be open to the public with Class 6A conducting double octafinals (32) at 12:30 p.m., Octafinals (16) at 2:45 p.m., Quarterfinals (8) at 5 p.m., Semifinals (4) at 7:15 p.m. and Finals at 9:15 p.m. Class 5A Octafinals will begin at 2:45 p.m., followed by Quarterfinals (5 p.m.), Semifinals (7:15 p.m.) and Finals (9:15 p.m.).

Day of Service

What: As part of the Kelly Rogers inaugural 2019 festivities, communities across Kansas are organizing service projects as part of a statewide Day of Service. In Garden City, participants will be collecting supplies and donations for Mosaic's group homes, selling tickets for the Finney County Humane Society's annual fundraiser and collecting grocery vouchers and donations for Oasis of Peace's shelter for women escaping sex trafficking.

When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday

Where: Patrick Dugan's Coffee House, 301 N. Main St.


Drop-in Art Saturday

What: Drop in at Garden City Arts and enjoy multiple art-making stations suitable for the whole family. All ages are welcome.

When: Between 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday.
