Crews from three area fire departments responded to an early-morning blaze on Tuesday just northwest of Topeka, but when they arrived, they found a controlled burn outside a business, authorities said.
Flames were reported showing around 6:30 a.m. from an area near the southwest side of N.W. US-75 and US-24 highways.
Initial reports indicated a semi-trailer on fire at the Hoyt trucking company in the 4400 block of N.W. US-24 highway.
However, crews that arrived on the scene found that the fire was the result of a controlled burn near the business, and that the blaze was outside the Topeka city limit. Authorities said a burn permit had been issued for the location, but authorities apparently weren't aware the fire was going to take place in the predawn hours of Tuesday morning.
By 6:50 a.m., the fire appeared to have burned down and crews had cleared the scene.
