Emergency personnel responded to a fire in the garage of a home on Crestway Drive Tuesday afternoon that caused at least an estimated $85,000 in damages but injured no one.

At 2:04 p.m., Garden City firefighters responded to 1724 Crestway Drive on a report of a fire in the house’s garage, said Garden City police Sgt. Lana Urteaga. Firefighters, police and Finney County EMS arrived on scene and blocked off the street at Van Dittie Drive, and saw that the entire three-car garage was engulfed in flames.

Homeowner Ronnie Waltz, 67, and his son, Toby Waltz, 43, were in the house when the fire started. Both were evaluated by first responders on the scene, Urteaga said. Neither was taken to St. Catherine Hospital for treatment, Urteaga said.

There was a minimum of $85,000 in damages to the house, Urteaga said, which appeared to mostly be confined to the garage.

As a precautionary measure, officers attempted to evacuate the corner house’s lone next door neighbor, but no one was home, Urteaga said. No other homes were damaged, she said.

According to police, the street was blocked off for about three hours.
