Garden City USD 457 awarded $200 mini-grants to five district teachers Tuesday morning that will be used to purchase equipment and materials for various projects.

The Garden City Public Schools Foundation Grant Squad presented the grants to the teachers, who were selected from 44 staff applications, in surprise celebrations in their classrooms, according to a press release from the district. The grants were awarded to Jessica Solis and Jill Reagle at Victor Ornelas Elementary School, Amy Golay at Jennie Wilson Elementary School, Darla Jackson at Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center and Sandra Naeve at Garden City High School.

Solis plans to use her grant to purchase supplies for Genius Hour, a program where students create and explore "one essential question" through a final project, and Reagle intends to use hers to purchase materials to establish Kagan structures for reading and math lessons in her classroom.

Jackson is looking to purchase materials to better engage students during the school's "Stretch" time. Golay will buy a Sphero BOLT robot as a class pet, and Naeve plans to purchase Ozobots, both of which will be used to integrate robotics into the curriculum and teach students how to code.
