Eight area teens will be competing Friday night in the annual Fiesta Scholarship Pageant at Garden City Community College, with a $1,000 scholarship on the line for the winner.

The pageant is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building at GCCC.

Pageant contestants include: Julieta Corpus-Ochoa, 18, of Garden City; Nyalee Duran, 16, of Garden City; Juliana Gallegos, 16, of Lakin; Marissa Hernandez, 17, of Garden City; Alondra Deleon Herrada, 18, of Garden City; Alexis McGee, 16, of Holcomb; Janisa Nuñez, 16, of Garden City; and Hailey Sullivan, 19, of Garden City.

The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship provided by Valley State Bank. Runner-up scholarships valued at $500, provided by Central Cup, and another for $250, provided by Lorena Montana of MBA Real Estate, will also be awarded.

The competition will be judged by Aaron Kucharik, Price and Sons Funeral Home; Dawn Oberheim, of D.O. Lashes; Dora Herrera of Community Corrections; Kacey Duncan, Western State Bank; Sean Collins, Collins Marketing Creative; and Medardo Muñoz, Tequilas Mexican Grill.

The pageant winner will qualify for an opportunity to participate in the Miss Kansas Pageant. Admission to the event is $1 per person at the door.

Fiesta organizers provided bios for each of the eight contestants:

Julieta Corpus-Ochoa

The daughter of Monica R. And Santiago Montano, Julieta currently is a freshman at GCCC. She says she hopes to one day be an early childhood educator. Her hobbies include spending time with family and friends and dancing. She is a member of HALO and also volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Nyalee Duran

The daughter of Monica Duran and Manuel Gutierrez, Nyalee is a freshman at Garden City High School. Her career ambition is to go into criminal justice and become an attorney. She enjoys playing softball, is on the GCHS dance team and also has been on a competitive cheer team. She volunteers with Girl Scouts and visits nursing homes with her choir team.

Juliana Gallegos

The daughter of Brenda Rios, Juliana is a junior at Lakin High School. She said she plans to one day become a pediatrician. Cheerleading, dance team and working on the school yearbook are among her activities.

Marissa Hernandez

The daughter of Sophia and Jose Hernandez, Marissa is a freshman at GCCC, where she plans to graduate with an associate's degree and then attend Kansas State University. She plans to earn her master's degree in chemical engineering, and eventually her doctorate. She plays piano and is on the GCCC dance team. She said she also enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Alondra Deleon Herrada

The daughter of Juana and Socorro Deleon, Alondra is senior at GCHS. She plans to become an obstetrician, but also likes photography. She says singing is a passion of hers, and she especially enjoys helping in the community.

Alexis McGee

The daughter of Yalanda and Kevin McGee, Alexis is a junior at Holcomb High School. She plans to attend college, major in nursing and hopes to become a prenatal nurse. In school, she is involved in cheerleading, dance team, choir, FCCLA and forensics. She also sings on her church's youth worship team and volunteers with childcare at the church.

Janisa Nuñez

The daughter of Terbina and Jesus Nunez, Janisa is a junior at GCHS. She plans to one day attend medical school, where she will study to become a pediatric ophthalmologist. Attending church, spending time with family and going to concerts are among her activities. She has participated in marching and concert band, and is a student athletic trainer.

Hailey Sullivan

The daughter of Jodie Sullivan, Hailey graduated in December 2017 from the GCCC cosmetology program and works as a hairstylist at NStyle Salon in Garden City. Her ambition is to broaden her knowledge of her profession, and earn her business degree, which she hopes would help her eventually own her own business. Her hobbies include traveling and going to concerts.
