Two Fort Riley soldiers made a precautionary landing with no injuries in Finney County Tuesday for reasons that are currently under investigation.
The soldiers, members of the Army's 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, were piloting an Apache helicopter during a training exercise when they made a precautionary landing at 2 p.m. Tuesday in an open field about 14 miles south of Garden City, said Jennifer Chance, public affairs and non-commissioned officer-in-charge for the 1st Infantry Division. She said the helicopter landed safely.
Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the landing and assisted with securing the area, Chance said. She said the landing is under investigation, per Army protocol.
Chance said a maintenance team assessed the helicopter’s state on Wednesday with the intent of bringing it back to full operational capacity. Once that was achieved, the division planned to fly the helicopter back to Fort Riley, she said. She did not know the status of the aircraft on Thursday morning.
