The Finney County Sheriff's Office is investigating two shootings that left one person dead and two others wounded, and as of mid-afternoon Sunday, deputies had taken two suspects into custody and were trying to determine if the incidents were related.

The two incidents happened sometime between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, according to the sheriff's office, which has yet to release a specific timeline for the incidents.

The first incident involved a suspect or suspects shooting at a vehicle on West U.S. Highway 50 between Third Street and Campus Drive, according to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office. One person involved in that incident was transported to St. Catherine Hospital and later died. Law enforcement has not identified the victim.

The sheriff's office also is investigating a second incident that occurred in the 2500 block of West Jones Avene, where two people were shot and are being treated at St. Catherine Hospital for their injuries. Authorities have not yet identified the victims of those incidents either.

Finney County Sheriff Kevin Bascue said that a suspect in at least one of the shootings was arrested shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, after the sheriff's office, Garden City Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol mounted an extensive search in rural Finney County in the vicinity of Klotz Sand and Asphalt Paving Co., Inc. The male suspect has not yet been named.

According to a comment from the sheriff's office on one of its Facebook posts about the incidents, a search warrant was executed in Garden City after 3 p.m. Sunday that led to a second suspect being taken into custody for the shooting incident on West U.S. 50. The comment did not say the location for where the search warrant was served, or identify the suspect.

According to Bascue, authorities are investigating as many as four incidents that may or may not be connected in southwest Finney County, off River Road, in the vicinity of Klotz Sand and Asphalt Paving, near Holcomb.

“They could or couldn’t be related. All four incidences appeared to have happened out in the county,” Bascue said Sunday afternoon. “What we know right now is that we have one subject who is dead. We have two other subjects who have or had been treated at the hospital for gunshot wounds, and the fourth subject that we’re ... looking for is a subject that may or may not have been involved in the incidences earlier.”

While investigating the second incident, sheriff’s deputies were involved in a vehicle pursuit, during which shots were fired at deputies, Bascue said.

According to Bascue, the suspect's vehicle was then found abandoned on West River Road, approximately two miles east of the Finney-Kearny county line near Klotz Sand and Asphalt Paving.

“The vehicle has some damage to it, but no one was in it when deputies arrived on scene,” Bascue said. “We’re not sure how long the suspect had been at this location prior to deputies getting here. … This incident, as well as the incidences involving the victims who have been shot, those matters are being investigated at the moment.”

Bascue said the investigations are still in their early stages and that it is unknown if the suspect on River Road was involved in the other incidents.

“Right now, officers are just gathering information and getting search warrants. … No reports have been completed as of this time,” Bascue said. “We’re still in the phase of gathering information, who the victims are and those types of things, but we are involved in the investigations at the other locations, as well. We just have a presence out here.”

Bascue said more information likely will be released Monday morning.
