A 49-year-old Scott City woman was injured Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident in rural Lane County.

Lori Burkhart was eastbound on Kansas Highway 96 about two miles west of the K-96/K-23 intersection at about 2:17 p.m. Friday, when the 2014 Ford Mustang she was driving went left of center. Pedro Ochoa, 59, Dodge City, was westbound on K96 in a 2007 Kenworth semi and drove onto the grass shoulder to avoid colliding with Burkhart’s vehicle, but her vehicle struck the semi, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Burkhart’s vehicle went into the south ditch, and the semi jack-knifed and struck an electrical box in the south ditch before coming to rest.

Burkhart, who according to the KHP report was not wearing a seat belt, was injured and taken to Lane County Hospital. A passenger in her vehicle, 8-year-old Cade Burkhart of Scott City, was wearing his seat belt and was not injured.

Ochoa, who was not wearing a seat belt, was not injured.
