For it’s 50th anniversary celebration, Beef Empire Days is bringing back street dancing, along with a twist on the classic event with the Beef, Beer and Boots - Dancing in the Park event.

The event begins at 4 p.m. and runs through 11 p.m. June 9 at Stevens Park and Heroes Way, and will include music, food, beer and more.

“One of the things I did when I first got this position was ask people, ‘What do you remember? What kind of things do you want to see come back?’ I consistently got comments on the street dance,” Stacey Carr, executive director of Beef Empire Days said. “There used to be street dances years and years ago, a part of Beef Empire Days, probably in the late ‘80s… That was one of the things the people really wanted to bring back… I just think it was really important to come in with the 50th year and do some big things.”

Partnering with Downtown Vision and the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce, the event takes the classic street dance and combines it with some of the things Downtown Vision is doing in order to draw people to the downtown area, Carr said.

“I had a meeting with Downtown Vision, and I said, ‘Hey, you guys have this really cool thing going right now with your food trucks, what if we combined those and did kind of a 2018 spin on the old street dance and combine those things?” Carr said, referencing Downtown Vision’s Food Truck Fridays event, which brings in a number of food trucks downtown the first Friday of every month.

“The idea comes from that old street dance,” Carr said. “We’re taking the old street dance and combining it with a new, 2018 spin.”

Food trucks operators who want to participate in the event can enter a beef dish into a contest, which will be judged, and the winner will be named the Beef Empire Days 2018 Food Truck Vendor of the Year, Carr said.

Along with the food trucks, there will be a beer garden with Tecate and Tecate Light, as well as a deejay for music, along with a reunion performance of Twin Country, which Carr described as a “local legend.”

“Twin Country is reuniting after 19 years to come play at Stevens Park for the Beef, Beer and Boots event. What is so awesome about it is they used to play at the street dances. They played at Beef Empire Days for years,” Carr said. “They played all over southwest Kansas and farther on, but were very well-known in this part of the state… It’s just really cool to have them come back and reunite and do this for the 50th.”

June 9 marks one of the busiest days for Beef Empire Days, including the Chuckwagons at the Zoo event, the annual parade, and several other events. But the Beef, Beer and Boots event is a way to celebrate and close out the day.

“That day really focuses on the heart of the city, which is downtown,” Carr said. “ … No one can say there is nothing to do in Garden City that week, let alone that day. I’m super excited about that. We have a lot of stuff going on.”

During the Beef, Beer and Boots event, a drawing for a 2018 GMC Sierra SLT will take place and the winner will be announced at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the drawing can be purchased at The Corner on Main, Exclusive Barber Shop, Illusions, Another Look, AAA Pawn, Crazy House, Baker Boot, Appliance and Furniture Mart, J&J Autoplex, and the Beef Empire Days Office.

Carr said tickets purchased for the drawing also can be used for discounts at various participating locations.

Along with the GMC Sierra, those who purchase tickets can win a Traeger grill or a beef bundle.

“You don’t have to be present to win, but how fun would it be if you were?” Carr said.
