A grassfire that started Wednesday night south of Syracuse engulfed 16 square miles before it was extinguished in the early hours of Thursday morning.

According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was caused by a lightning strike about 8 miles south of Syracuse sometime around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

No significant damage or injuries were reported, and firefighters from Hamilton, Stanton and Greeley counties, as well as Prowers County, Colorado, extinguished the flames by 3:45 a.m. Thursday.
