The Garden City Police Department is taking applications for its Student Police Academy.
The academy, which is scheduled to start Sept. 21, is open to students in grades seven through 12 who reside in Finney County or attend schools in Garden City and Holcomb. The deadline to apply is Sept. 13.
The academy is designed to acquaint students with the police department and criminal justice system and provides students with an opportunity to positively interact with police officers so that they will better understand the role of the police in keeping the community safe, as well as their own role in the community. The academy also can be a resource for students considering a career in law enforcement.
The class will meet from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday for seven weeks. Each session will feature different topics presented by officers. Some of the topics include: vehicle stops, DUI, crime scene investigation, underage drinking, S.W.A.T., police motorcycle operations, police K-9, and the department structure.
The class will conclude with a small graduation for the students that complete the course.
Applications will be available from any school resource officer, online at gcpolice.org, or at the Garden City Police Department.
Class size is limited to 50 students.
Questions regarding the Academy may be directed to any school resource officer or the Community Response Division at 276-1300.
