GUYMON, Okla. — There's something about looking back at film and finding out what works, and what doesn't.

That's one thing that the Garden City Lady Buffaloes found out Friday night when they employed an oppressive full-court press against Guymon, forcing the Lady Tigers into 32 turnovers that eventually paved the way for a resounding 72-36 victory.

It almost mirrored last year's 66-30 triumph in Garden City, and that's exactly what head coach David Upton was looking for.

"We knew that they couldn't handle the press, so that's what we used, and it worked," Upton said. "We wanted to get the ball into our bigs and they did a good job of that, too."

It was a balanced scoring attack that also propelled the Lady Buffs to their 10th win of the season against five losses.

Jaymie Bernbeck led the way with 16 points; Jessica Carrillo came off the bench to score 14 points and grab a team-high seven rebounds, while Taryn Tempel chipped in with 11.

Carrillo said it was her job to post up and then execute what she's been working on recently, just turning and taking the ball to the basket.

"We've been working on the post-up moves, and tonight it worked," Carrillo said of her 5-of-7 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 free throws. "The guards did a good job of getting me the ball. We ran a lot of plays through the post tonight, so it made it more available to me."

The Lady Buffs were never at risk of losing, leading from start to finish.

After building a 48-21 halftime lead, the Lady Buffs cruised through the final 16 minutes, outscoring the Tigers 24-15.

The Lady Buffs led early, 5-2, and then reeled off 12 unanswered points, and finished the first quarter with a 17-4 advantage.

Their defense was responsible for the breakout quarter, forcing Guymon into 13 miscues in the opening eight minutes.

"I thought we got good effort from everybody, and our subs tonight maintained the intensity when they were on the floor," Upton said.

The Lady Buffs kept piling it on in the second quarter, starting with a 10-4 run, then when the lead slipped to 15, 32-17, on the Lady Tigers' third 3-pointer in less than three minutes, Upton called timeout, the Lady Buffs regrouped and then answered with a 16-4 runout to end the half.

That made it 48-21 at the break, and perhaps the most points scored in a half by a Garden City team. Included in that outburst was Bernbeck's 15 points, 10 points by Carrillo and an amazing 18-of-24 shooting at the free-throw line.

The Lady Buffs blistered the nets in that first 16 minutes, scorching the basket with 15-of-26 shots for 57.6 percent. Guymon, meanwhile, was a respectable 8 of 19.

The Lady Buffs get a week off before heading to Great Bend in returning to Western Athletic Conference action.

They trail the Lady Panthers by a game in the standings, and have lost twice to Great Bend this year, once at the Hays City Shootout and once at home in WAC play.

Notes: With her 11 points Friday, Tempel, a 5-foot-8 senior, is now just four points away from becoming the Lady Buffs'  all-time leading scorer, trailing Deann Craft by three, 943-940. Craft set the benchmark for the Lady Buffs from 1979 to 1982. Bernbeck is now sixth on the all-time list with 612 points, with sights now on Heather Wasinger (625, 1987 to 1990) and Tara Oppliger (629, 2001 to 2004). Sadie Ochs is third on the chart with 896 points (1990 to 1994).
