The Ulysses Tigers boys basketball team held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by Guymon to post a 56-51 victory Saturday night and claim the 2009 Hugoton Blue and Red Classic championship.

Junior Josh Jarnagin scored 14 points to pace the unbeaten Tigers. In all, seven other Tigers scored to help the team keep its perfect record intact.

The Tigers led just 8-5 after the first quarter and 20-12 at halftime.

A big third quarter, though, where they outscored the Oklahoma Tigers 23-11 to take command, 43-23. Guymon, however, scored 28 points in the final eight minutes to just 13 for Ulysses.

Chris Oliver, and Braden Langston scored nine points each for the Tigers and Chase Newell added eight. Trey Fankhouser led Guymon with 20 points while Colter Headrick, and Matthew Legrange added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

It was a long-range shootout as the Tigers of Ulysses hit eight 3-pointers while the Tigers of Guymon knocked down nine.

Perryton defeated Stratford, 50-35, in a battle of Texas schools in the girls championship game.

In other final day play at the Blue and Red, it was Hugoton's boys taking a 65-47 win over Perryton for third place; Stratford over Hooker, Okla., 55-43, in the fifth place contest and Southwestern Heights narrowly edging Marlow, Okla., 44-42, for seventh place.

In the girls division, it was Southwestern Heights over Ulysses, 46-31, in the third place game; Marlow over Guymon, 46-31, for fifth place and Hooker downing Hugoton, 34-16, in the seventh place contest.

Rolla Showcase

At Rolla, the Syracuse boys saw a 10-point third quarter lead disappear in the final eight minutes Saturday night as the Bulldogs fell from the ranks of the unbeaten in a 36-35 loss to Beaver, Okla. in the championship game of the Rolla Showcase.

The Bulldogs were ahead of the Dusters 33-23 after three periods but could only score a single field goal by J.D. Howell. Syracuse had led all the other quarter stops by scores of 17-12 and 24-17.

James Burkett scored 13 points to pace the Bulldogs (3-1) while Samuel Becker had 11 for the Dusters.

In other boys contests, Stanton County took third place with a 60-45 victory over Rolla; South Baca, Colo. claimed fifth place with a61-47 win over Elkhart and Moscow won the seventh place game in a 60-40 decision over Keyes, Okla.

In the girls competition, Beaver repeated as champions with a 69-35 rout of Elkhart; Stanton County's Lady Trojans defeated Rolla, 63-42, in the third place contest; Syracuse tripped Moscow, 31-27, for fifth place and Keyes, Okla. took seventh with a 40-19 win over the Rolla junior varsity.
