Starting next week, the City of Garden City Street and Parks Department will be picking up discarded live Christmas trees. Residents should avoid placing trees in dumpsters, the city requests.

A press statement from the city indicated the trees will be picked up Monday, Jan. 5 through Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015.

“Discarded Christmas trees must be placed next to the curb, in front of your residence, before your scheduled pick up date. Please do not put trees in the alley or in your trash dumpster,” the statement read in part.

Depending on the weather, the pickups will be done Jan. 5, 2015 North of Kansas Avenue and West of Main Street; Jan. 6, 2015 North of Kansas Avenue and East of Main Street; Jan. 7, 2015 South of Kansas Avenue and West of Main Street and Jan. 8, 2015 South of Kansas Avenue and East of Main Street.

Trees should be free of tinsel, ornaments, and plastic tree bags, the statement emphasized. “Flocked trees will not be picked up,” the statement read.

According to the release, the trees will be recycled to provide mulch for various plantings on city properties throughout Garden City.

Residents who would like to dispose of their tree before their scheduled pickup date may take it to the KDHE Tree Disposal Site, located south of the Lee Richardson Zoo. The drop-off site will be marked with a sign and will be open from Friday, Jan. 2 through Friday, Jan. 9. Recyclable Christmas trees only may be placed south of the gate outside the fence.
