When the Garden City Buffaloes’ boys’ basketball team takes the floor, the ultimate goal of the 32-minute contest is to wear the opponent down with a full-court press and fast-break offense. Sometimes, as it did Friday night at The Garden, it took the entire 32 minutes for the game’s outcome to be determined and this time it was by the thinnest of margins, 65-62, when a desperation heave from past mid-court by Wichita-Life Prep Academy went awry.
Garden City High School wrestling coach Carlos Prieto knows all too well about the Kansas City Stampede tournament that always concludes the December schedule for his Buffaloes’ teams. “It’s a meat-grinder as I told the boys and girls before,” Prieto said a day after concluding the first three weeks of the 2021-2022 season in Kansas City.
The Garden City High School girls’ basketball team had hoped to head into the holiday break with some momentum if they could capture their first victory of the season on Friday in a home match-up with private school Wichita- Life Prep Academy.
Area high school basketball teams have concluded their December portion of the season, now taking a holiday break before games starting back up in January. Holcomb boys 74, Goodland 43 Damon Mesa and Daegan VanPelt combined to lead all scorers Friday at Goodland, scoring 18 points each in the Holcomb High School boys’ basketball team victory, 74-43.
