Student achievement debated

Lawmakers say a deep dive on student achievement in Kansas schools is needed, with the dialogue likely to have a substantial effect on the policy choices of the GOP-controlled legislators. The formation of the Special Committee on Education, which met for the first time Tuesday, is a sign that longstanding questions over how many Kansas students are performing as expected — and whether those figures are acceptable in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and increased investment in the classroom.

Applications available for EWAP program

Kansas households adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic may benefit from a new program to help restore or prevent disconnection of drinking water and wastewater services. The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) is the administrating agency for the Emergency Water Assistance Program (EWAP), a new temporary federal program authorized by the American Rescue Plan of 2021 and the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021.

HOLIDAY CHEER FOR THOSE WHO SERVE

Barbados sheds allegiance to Britain

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Barbados stopped pledging allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday as it shed another vestige of its colonial past and became a republic for the first time in history. Several leaders, dignitaries and artists, including Prince Charles and Rihanna, attended the ceremony that began late Monday in a popular square in the capital, Bridgetown, where the statue of a well-known British lord was removed last year amid a worldwide push to erase symbols of oppression.
