GCCC receives donation from Dream First Bank for STEM project

Garden City Community College received a $25,000 donation from Dream First Bank, in the form of a tax credit, on Monday for the STEM Success Center project. GCCC is selling Kansas Department of Revenue tax credits to be used for the ongoing STEM Success Center project, a 10,000 square feet addition to the Warren Fouse Science and Math building for learning space dedicated to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Museum October programs explore names of various local streets

The Finney County Historical Museum’s fall series of Evening at the Museum and History at High Noon presentations will continue at noon Oct. 12 and 7 p.m. Oct. 18, exploring the names of various streets and additional locations in the community, as well as the stories behind them. Though hosted and coordinated by the museum, the presentations are sponsored by the Western Kansas Community Foundation and take place at noon the second Wednesday and 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month, September to November and January to April. Admission is free and those attending should use the museum’s north entrance. The museum is located at 403 S. Fourth St., in Garden City’s Finnup Park, and listeners are welcome to bring their own lunch or dinner, if desired, with the museum providing cookies and beverages. Entitled “In Case You’ve Ever Wondered,” each of the two October programs will be presented by Museum Education Coordinator Johnetta Hebrlee. “We may also be solving some other quirky little mysteries in the community,” Hebrlee said.

Learning Quest funds presented at area schools

Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Rogers has been in southwest Kansas in September, presenting funds through the Learning Quest program. Rogers presented Stacy Bynum of Holcomb High School with a $1,000 check Sept. 14 that can be used for the purchase of school supplies. She is a teacher at HHS. This giveaway was made possible because of Learning Quest 529 accounts, which allow individuals to save money for post-secondary educational expenses.

Maine approves first religious school for tuition reimbursement

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine is ready to fund tuition for some religious school students for the first time since a Supreme Court ruling in June ordered the state to treat those schools the same as other private schools regarding tuition reimbursement. Cheverus High School, a Jesuit college preparatory school in Portland, was the only religious school to apply for participation in the state’s tuition reimbursement plan and its application was approved by the state, a state official said Thursday.
