Garden City Mayor Janet Doll and state Rep. John Doll will speak to students at Kenneth Henderson Middle School from 9:10 to 10:10 a.m., and 1:20 to 2:20 p.m. Tuesday. The two will talk to seventh-graders about what it's like being mayor and what's happening in Garden City.
The class is working on an essay project called, “If I Were Mayor,” which is actually a contest through the League of Kansas Municipalities. The organization has coordinated a junior high essay contest to encourage good government out of a belief that civics education is the foundation of an active and informed citizenry.
The essay asks students to describe what they would do as mayors to improve their community. The league will select a winner from six regions across the state and each winning student will receive a $125 cash prize in addition to recognition at the state capitol on City Hall Day in February. One overall winner also will be selected to represent the entire state and will receive a $250 cash prize.
