The Garden City Community College men’s basketball team squared off against the Colby All-Stars in the Colby Classic in the first game of the Busters’ season on Friday night. The Busters started the season on the right foot, beating the All-Stars, 91-47.
Josh Fleming led the team with 13 points. Diontae Jones notched a double-double, with ten points and eleven rebounds, eight of which were on the offensive glass. Jabar Ray and Gage Loy each scored ten points.
“We played hard and together,” head coach Brady Trenkle said of the Busters’ 1-0 start. “We will keep getting better as the season goes on. Everyone played with intensity and effort. We executed about as well as you could in a game like that.”
As a team, the Busters out-rebounded Colby, 72-43. From the field, the Busters shot 35-of-68, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range. The Busters also shot well from the charity stripe, going 17 of 22.
Meanwhile, the All-Stars were just 4-for-31 from deep.
“I am excited to see how this team can keep improving by the time we get to conference,” Trenkle said. “I challenged them on guarding the 3-point line, and we did a really good job.”
The Busters wrap up the Colby Classic with a 2 p.m. game against KSU-Salina Saturday.
