The Garden City High School debate team took first place in team sweepstakes at the TMP/Hays Monarch Classic on Dec. 13 in Hays.
The team had a nine and one win/loss record during the tournament.
In addition, the following individual students won awards: Amanda Serafin/Isabel Serafin, first place (five wins/no losses); Jaziel Armenta/Brianna Calderon, second place (four wins/one loss); Long Nguyen, third place in open (four wins/one loss); Isabel Serafin, first place speaker; Jaziel Armenta, second place Speaker; Brianna Calderon, third place, speaker; and Amanda Serafin, fourth place, speaker.
Students also participated at the West Kansas National Forensic League national qualifier in McPherson on Dec. 13.
Maggie Unruh and Mary Lynn Buchele took third place and are the first alternates for a national qualification in debate. Emily Unruh and Kaitlynn Smith took seventh place.
