Three former Garden City and area girls volleyball players competed in the just recently completed NJCAA National Volleyball Championships in Casper, Wyo.

Two-time Telegram All-Area performer and 2012 Player of the Year Casey Curran of Garden City competed for Iowa Western Community College, while former all-area selection Lindsay Wehkamp of Cimarron competed for Western Nebraska Community College. Former Hugoton star Nicole Kinser, who will also compete in track and field, competed for Hutchinson Community College at the national tourney.

Wehkamp was part of a team that finished 3-1 in the national tournament to claim fifth place, while Curran's Iowa Western team also went 3-1 and placed seventh. Hutchinson lost both of its matches at the tourney.

Western Nebraska, the tourney's No. 3 seed, won in straight sets against the Lady Blue Dragons (25-17, 25-14, 25-23). Western Nebraska then lost to Salt Lake Community College in straight sets (27-25, 25-19, 25-23). That dropped the Nebraska team into the consolation bracket where they defeated Northwest College 25-20, 25-9, 25-22. That put them into the fifth-place match against North Idaho College where they won in a tiebreaker fifth set (25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-9).

Wehkamp is a sophomore for Western Nebraska.

Curran and her Iowa Western team came into the tournament as the No. 4 seed and won its opener against New Mexico Military Institute (25-10, 24-26, 25-13, 26-24). In its second-round match, Iowa Western lost to Hillsborough in four sets (25-10, 24-26, 25-13, 26-24). That put them into the consolation bracket where they were upended by North Idaho (26-24, 24-26, 23-25, 21-25). In the seventh-place match, Iowa Western defeated Northwest College (25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 25-23).
