Garden City Community College’s theater director was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence after police found his wrecked vehicle.
The Finney County Sheriff’s Office reported that at 2:26 a.m. Saturday, deputies responded to an accident at the intersection of East U.S. Highway 50 and Campus Drive, where they observed a car in the ditch. The driver was not at the scene.
Police said the driver had been westbound on Highway 50 and attempted to turn left on Campus Drive, but lost control.
Police identified the driver as Phil Hoke and located him at his residence. According to police, he told the deputies he was the only one in the car and had lost control of it. He was asked to take a breath test.
Hoke had not returned a call for comment by press time Monday.
Dr. Herbert Swender, GCCC president, described Hoke as a “fine employee who is valued at the college.”
“He’s on his Christmas vacation,” Swender said. “We don’t have much information about what happened, but we value him very much as an employee. If he had an issue that came up, we are definitely sorry that it happened.”
Hoke’s employment status has not been affected, Swender said.
