In what had been expected to be one of their toughest tests of the 2014 season, the Garden City Lady Buffs' swim team finished a solid third in the team standings on Friday at the Manhattan Invitational.

The Lady Buffs finished with 400 points while Topeka-Washburn Rural and host Manhattan occupied the top two spots with 515 and 473 points, respectively. Topeka-Hayden was a distant fourth with 321 points.

Senior Samantha Norton was the top performer as she captured first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:32.83 and added in a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.83.

Lindsay Bradstreet took a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:22.66. Claire Schmidt and Laura Richmeier had fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (2:40.71) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:24.35). Bradstreet also garnered a fourth-place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:26.81.

"We're pretty pleased with the way the meet went," said GCHS coach Casey Wise. "Coming off a week of spring break, we knew our conditioning might be an issue, but overall the girls really swam well. We'd had a good week of practice, so it's nice to see the hard work pay off."

A pair of relay teams also placed third for the Buffs, the 200-yard medley team of Ashley Longoria, Bradstreet, Schmidt and Norton clocking a 2:10.90. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Abigail Ginest-Dougherty, Longoria, Andrea Castillo and Erika Schafer finished with a time of 1:58.89.

The Lady Buffs will host Liberal and Dodge City in a 4 p.m. Thursday triangular at the Garden City Family YMCA pool.
