Holcomb had to feel as though they hit all the bad luck a Friday the 13th could throw at them.

The Longhorns, fresh off a one-point win at powerhouse Meade last week, fell victim to concussions as they lost to league rival Hugoton 20-7 on the road.

All three of the Longhorns' returning starters from last year left the game with concussions.

Quarterback Heath Tucker left after just the second series, and running backs Corey Rupp and Blake Richmeier both left early in the third quarter.

That left a backup quarterback and two freshman running backs to face an experienced Eagles squad that outgained Holcomb 266 yards to 75.

Hugoton quarterback Yates Sutton scored three times on big plays, racking up 149 rushing yards.

He opened the scoring late in the first period on a 53-yard run, scored on an 80-yard run late in the second, and plunged in from 3 yards out late in the fourth.

Holcomb's lone score came in the second when Calen Rupp, replacing Tucker, hit Corey run on a 26-yard pass with 1:19 to play and down just 14-7 at the break.

"You get that many injuries, and we're so inexperienced, we couldn't get lined up right," Holcomb coach Jerry Johnson said. "And we had so many little penalties, most of the time we were starting out first-and-15 or second-and-15."

Hugoton (1-1) ran 50 plays, 45 of them on the ground. However, they punted just four times while Holcomb punted nine.

Holcomb (1-1) finished with 12 penalties for 65 yards and just three first downs.

The passing game didn't execute well, Johnson said, and that allowed Hugoton to set up six in the box, making the running game that much harder.

"Defensively we were all right," Johnson said. "We just gave up three big plays. At halftime it was a 14-7 game. But we just couldn't move the ball. It was just a bad night all around."

Players had to step into roles to which they are not accustomed, he said, and it was just tough to get into any kind of flow.

"I don't know how to explain it. It was the most frustrating thing I've ever been a part of," Johnson said. "But they fought as hard as they could."

He added that his three concussed players will get evaluated over the next few days, but even so it makes next week's game with rival Scott City at home even more daunting.
