SUBLETTE It was hard to assess what the effect of playing three games in five days had on the Cimarron Lady Bluejays here Monday night.

Their defense was solid throughout the game as they dominated the second and third quarters, and won, 39-21 over the Lady Larks in a Hi-Plains League game that was postponed from a week earlier.

"We played Thursday (46-36 win over Hodgeman County) and we played Friday (62-30 romp over Wichita County)," said Cimarron coach David Ediger. "We didn't play very well against Hodgeman County but then turned around and played well on Friday. (Monday), it was a little of both."

The Lady Bluejays' defense harrassed Sublette all night, forcing the Lady Larks into 19 turnovers and just 20 percent shooting (8-of-40 from the field and 2-of-10 at the free throw line).

Cimarron's shooting night wasn't much better. The Lady Bluejays finished by hitting 13-of-45 (28.8 percent).

"The game will look like we played poorly because anytime you shoot the way we did, you're not gonna show very well," said Sublette coach Monty Marlin. "I'm not disappointed in the way we played defensively.

"We held them to 39 points and that's good. Unfortunately, we just didn't make anything. There's not a lot to basketball, but one thing is for sure when you're shooting it, the shots need to go in. Ours didn't."

In a game that started out slowly on the offensive side, the Lady Bluejays led just 7-3 after one quarter and then extended the advantage to 18-7 at halftime.

A strong defensive performance sparked the Cimarron third quarter as the Bluejays went on a 10-1 scoring spree to move out to a commanding 28-8 lead.

It came as no surprise that juniors Lindsay Wehkamp (13 points, nine rebounds) and Avery Burns (12 points, including a pair of three pointers) led the offensive attack for Cimarron. The two have been paving the way for Cimarron's outstanding 15-1 7-0 in the HPL start to the season.

"We came out a little slow but I think in the second half we played our game," said the 5-11 Wehkamp. "Our defense gets our offense going and we like to run up and down the floor making our shots."

While the scoring doesn't reflect it from Monday's game, Wehkamp said the team had been getting more point output from other players in recent games.

"We're starting to make more screens and getting people open," Wehkamp said.

With the regular season heading into its final two weeks, the Lady Bluejays are cautiously optimistic as they get ready for postseason play.

"We've improved a lot and if we play our game, we'll go far," Wehkamp said. "We've just got to keep working hard and improving."

Sublette did win the rebounding battle, 40-32, as Emily Meyer grabbed a game-high 10 boards. The Lady Larks were led by Anna Messerly's nine points.

Neither team gets to rest as they both are back in action tonight. Cimarron travels to Scott City while Sublette hosts South Gray.
