Like a handful of neighborhoods in Garden City last Tuesday night, our neighborhood got to know each other a little better. Thanks to the National Night Out program, we are more familiar with the folks beyond our property lines. This annual event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships while letting criminals know that we are organized and ready to fight back.

On behalf of the families in the Pheasant Valley neighborhood we would like to say "thank you" to Sunflower Electric Co., for providing their grill, and to High Plains Public Radio for the use of several large tables. Most importantly, thank you to the Garden City Police Department Bike Patrol members, Garden City Fire House 2 team and GCPD Motorcycle Patrol members who came by our block party. We really enjoyed meeting with each of you and learning more about what you do for our community. Another special "thank you" to Garden City Police Officers Troy Davis and Bob Scrivner for helping to coordinate our event.

If your neighborhood didn't participate in this year's National Night Out, make it a date for next year. Get in touch with your local law enforcement office to find out what you can do to strengthen your neighborhood by getting to know your neighbors and local emergency service personnel. It will become an annual event everyone looks forward to!
