Of all the issues facing our nation these days, food labeling can sometimes get lost in the shuffle. However, as a mother and a farmer’s wife, it is an issue of vital importance to me. I want to know that the food I am feeding my family is safe and that the information on the box is based on sound science.
I agree that everyone should be able to make their own choices at the supermarket that they believe are best for their family. Unfortunately, anti-GMO activists are muddying the water with fallacies and misrepresentation. They are ignoring thousands of studies and two decades of safe consumption in their misguided mission to impose confusing state labeling initiatives that would spread misinformation and lead to higher grocery prices for consumers. These laws would cripple interstate commerce and cause food prices to skyrocket – as much as $500 a year for the average family.
Kansas’ own Rep. Mike Pompeo has sponsored legislation, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, that would ensure the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is in charge of food safety in this country – not special interests and activists. Likewise, his bill would guarantee that any food labeling is science-based, consistent and reliable.
As a Kansan who cares about growing food and feeding my family, I support Rep. Pompeo’s legislation and I am urging Congress to push this bill across the finish line.
