Garden City Rotary recently celebrated its 90th year of service in Garden City with a celebration dinner at The Golf Club at Southwind.

The club started in 1922 when George Finnup visited the Dodge City Rotary Club. Finnup was not much of a "joiner' himself but was impressed by the fellowship exhibited at the Dodge City Rotary Club. He discussed his trip with Judge William E. Hutchison, who visited the Dodge City Rotary Club and was likewise impressed with the club's activities. He discussed the possibilities of organizing a club with Walter O. Carter, Hubert O. Judd, E. Lester McCoy and John Walters. After contacting Rotary International, Ross H. Bangs, secretary of the Dodge City club, was commissioned to organize the Garden City club with the Dodge City club serving as its sponsor.

The original charter members were selected and the club was officially chartered on Jan. 16, 1923. The organizational meeting were held in various offices and the charter meeting was held in the old Elks Club.

Today, Garden City Rotary meets every Wednesday at noon at the Clarion Inn and continues to look for members to carry the message of the Rotary Motto of "Service Above Self." For more information about the Rotary Club, go to
