DIGHTON — Helen Rogene Shay Hemel, 86, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at Lane County Long Term Care in Dighton.
She was born Sept. 20, 1928, in St. John, to Floyd Hogan and Pluma Mae Sawyer Shay. She graduated from Dighton High School.
Mrs. Hemel enjoyed making peanut brittle every year, dressed in her Santa suit, until her health in recent years kept her from the kitchen.
In 1950, she married Donald Dean Hemel. He died in 1988. She also was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Edwin Shay.
Survivors include a son, Curtis Hemel and wife Sheila of Dighton; a brother, Don Shay and wife Sherill of Dighton; a grandson, Beau Hemel of Garden City; a granddaughter, Bridgette Voll of Dighton; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in Dighton. Burial will be at Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
