In the nightcap of a Tuesday doubleheader at Alpine, Texas, the Garden City Wind pushed across three runs in the top of the 11th inning to defeat the host Cowboys, 16-13, in the final game of a road trip.
In the process, the Wind snapped a seven-game losing streak and improved to 3-10 overall as they prepare to return home for a two-game home stand against Trinidad, Colo.
That two-game brief home appearance begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Clint Lightner Stadium. Friday’s game also will have the first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
In Tuesday’s wild, extra-inning affair, the Wind fell behind the Cowboys 3-0 in the first, and were down 4-1 when they came to bat in the fifth. They erupted for 11 runs in the inning, only to see the Cowboys respond with three runs in the fifth and seventh, along with single runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth to come back from a 12-4 deficit.
Mike Rachun led off the final at-bat with a double and went to third on a wild pitch. Eli Roundtree walked and then stole second base. With one out, Ray Hernandez was issued an intentional walk to load the bases.
Taylor Ellis then had a sacrifice fly, scoring Rachun, with Roundtree moving to third. Jack Finnegan followed with an two-run single to right, scoring Roundtree and Hernandez.
Finnegan pitched the final four innings to pick up the victory for the Wind. He yielded just two runs and two hits while striking out four and walking none.
Ryan Whitt was the big offensive weapon for the Wind, going 3 for 6, with 6 RBIs. Included in that effort was a double and home run. Rachun was 3 of 7 with a pair of RBIs and Finnegan had his two RBIs as well.
Finnegan picked up the victory for the Wind while Andrew Miller took the loss for Alpine, which saw its record fall to 10-3.
Offense was the theme of the night, as the teams combined for the 29 runs on 32 hits, 10 of which went for extra bases.

Game 1: Alpine 10, Garden City 9
A six-run outburst in the fourth inning led the Alpine Cowboys to a 10-9 victory Tuesday over the Garden City Wind in a game at Alpine, Texas.
In Tuesday’s twin bill opening loss, the Wind had taken a 4-3 lead with four runs in the top of the third and then went ahead 5-3 in the fourth before the Cowboys exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The loss came despite a 14-hit attack that included three doubles and a pair of home runs. Alpine countered with four doubles and four round-trippers.
