The third day in a row facing the Great Bend Boom, didn’t go as well as the first two days for the Garden City Wind on Wednesday at Al Baird Field in Great Bend.
The Wind was blanked by the Boom, 4-0, to close out a three-game set with the new franchise in central Kansas.
Great Bend got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second when the Boom got a single, an RBI double from Dominique Lincoln and a fielder’s choice.
The Boom added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, getting an unearned run in the fifth with a couple of singles, sandwiched around an error and a stolen base.
The margin was increased to 4-0 in the seventh, as the Boom scored without the benefit of a hit.
Despite out-hitting the Boom 8-6, the Wind couldn’t crack the scoring column against Great Bend’s Patrick Barnett. Barnett walked just one Wind batter while striking out six. Barnett is 2-1 and has two shutouts to his credit.
Joey Cerere and Clay Ardeeser had two hits to pace the Wind offense.
The Wind’s Ryan Riordan pitched seven innings and absorbed the loss. He gave up all six hits, struckout six while walking three. Three of the four runs by the Boom were earned. Riordan saw his record fall to 0-4.
Barnett has now thrown 17 innings for the Boom, owning a 1.06 earned-run-average with 19 strikeouts.
The loss snapped a mini, 2-game win streak for the Wind, and they now stand at 5-8 this season. Great Bend, which ended its own short 2-game losing skein, improved to 7-4.
The Wind opens a four-game stand with Trinidad’s (Colo.) Triggers on Thursday. They play the first two games at home, with Thursday’s first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. at Clint Lightner Stadium. On Saturday, the teams head west to play at Trinidad for a brief weekend series. Monday will be the first day off for the team since the season opened on May 19, a string of 18 straight days.
