A car caught fire at a Garden City bank on Kansas Avenue Tuesday afternoon. No one was hurt, according to a Fire Department official.

Battalion Chief Ken Seirer, Garden City Fire Department, said the woman driving the vehicle noticed the car smoking while she was sitting in the drive through window of Golden Plains Credit Union on 1305 E. Kansas Ave.

She exited the vehicle immediately and called for help.

When the Fire Department arrived at about 4:15 p.m. the vehicle had caught fire.

Captain Randy Ralston, with the police department’s Office of Professional Standards said the case is being treated as a mechanical problem and nothing suspicious.

“There were no injuries, and the car was a total loss,” he said.

Jon Irsik, vice president branch coordinator for the Credit Union, said there didn’t appear to be any damage to the building. “There was a little bit of smoke in the drive through area, but that was cleared. There was quite a bit of smoke coming out of the engine compartment of the vehicle, but as far as I can tell, there was no damage inside or outside the Credit Union.”

The tellers at the drive through window were removed to a safe area.
