Clay Ardeeser homered twice and drove in six runs Sunday to power the Garden City Wind to a 20-8 rout over the Topeka Train Robbers in Topeka.
The Wind improved its record to 12-10 and remained hot by winning for the seventh time in the last 10 games. They are one game behind Pecos League North Division leader Trinidad, Colo.
The Wind pounded out 16 hits during the high-scoring affair, as Willie Ethington also homered and drove in three runs. Joey Cecere had four RBIs.
Craig Jaquez was the pitching beneficiary of the offensive explosion, picking up the win by going 5.2 innings, walking four and striking out four. But he also gave up all eight runs by the Train Robbers.
Austin Hilton, Nick Francis and Pedro Bacame combined to pitch the final 3.1 innings, holding the Robbers scoreless and hitless.
Trailing 4-3 after four innings, the Wind erupted for seven runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to break the game open. They tacked on three more in the seventh.
Nick Hernandez suffered the loss on the mound for the Train Robbers. He was tagged for six runs in four innings. In relief, Victor Soto and David Contreras didn’t fare much better as Soto gave up 11 runs on just five hits in two innings of work while Contreras pitched one inning, yielding three runs on three hits.
The Wind will begin a three-game home series at 6:30 p.m. Monday against Alpine, Texas, at Clint Lightner Stadium.
