A 41-year-old man riding a bicycle in rural Finney County was injured Saturday night when he was struck from behind by a hit-and-run driver.

Finney County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the accident, which occurred at about 11 p.m. in the 3000 block of North Business U.S. Highway 83, across from Brookover Feedyard.

According to the sheriff’s office, it appears Mason Smith, unknown address, was riding his bicycle northbound in the outside lane on Business 83, when an unknown vehicle struck him from behind and left the scene.

Three people passing by the location of the accident found Smith in the east ditch on the side of the highway, according to the sheriff’s office. They loaded Smith and his bicycle into their vehicle and drove him across the street to the nearby Dusty Trail Inn, 2808 Taylor Plaza.

EMS took Smith to St. Catherine Hospital, and he was later airlifted to Via Christi Health Hospital in Wichita with suspected head injuries. He was treated and released.

Evidence left at the scene suggests the vehicle might be a 2004 to 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, possibly bright silver in color, and that it might have damage to the passenger-side front bumper, according to the sheriff’s office. Smith was riding a red 10-speed bicycle, and he had a helmet on that had a small light on it.

Anyone who saw the accident or has any information about it, Smith or the suspect vehicle, is encouraged to contact the Finney County Sheriff’s Office at 272-3700.
