HAYS — As Garden City High School boys' soccer coach Joaquin Padilla put it, a win is a win.
But Tuesday's 3-0 win over Class 3A Thomas More Prep-Marian (0-4) in Hays also left the Buffaloes wanting.
"It's a win," Padilla said. "I thought we dominated the game. We missed a lot of shots. I don't think 3-0 is a good indicator of what it could have been."
The Buffaloes outshot the Monarchs nearly 3-1 and rarely provided them any real opportunity to score. But in the end it became more a game of what they didn't do, and that was capitalize on their scoring opportunities.
Garden City led 1-0 at the half after a goal from junior Eric Barragan in the 18th minute. It wasn't until the second half the Buffaloes started to make the most of their scoring chances.
"We needed to have a lot of touches, which we did, but we didn't score as many as we should have," Padilla said. "They had a good goalkeeper and they gave us a fight."
TMP goalkeeper Collan Lawson was effective in the net most of the game, but the sheer number of shots Garden City had finally got to him.
Junior David Amaro netted an unassisted goal in the 17th minute of the second half, and assisted on senior David Fuentes's goal five minutes later to put the game out of reach.
In four games this season, TMP has played a Class 6A, 5A and two 4A teams. Garden City was the latest in an example of the bigger schools being too much for the smaller school to handle.
"You go out and take your lumps from the big boys and hope when it comes regional time we play our competition well," TMP coach Shawn Lawson said. "There just isn't much we can do with it."
The win gets Garden City to 2-2 after going 1-2 at the Wichita South Titan Classic to open the season. The Buffs finally get a chance to play at home at 5:30 p.m. Thursday when they host Liberal in the Western Athletic Conference opener. The Buffs are the defending WAC champs.
