Three GCPD officers recognized for lifesaving efforts

Three Garden City Police Department officers, Andrew Cavalier, PJ Foster and Manuel Govea, have been awarded the GCPD’s Lifesaving Award. GCHS’ Kleysteuber brings home 6A state wrestling gold

PARK CITY - On a Saturday at the Kansas Class 6A State Championship when there were not as many bright spots as one would have hoped for from the Garden City Buffaloes, there was one shining moment for a senior who had endured a four-year journey from junior varsity to state champion. Senior Colin Kleysteuber came away as the only Buffs’ wrestler to grab a gold medal when the team had faltered earlier in the day during consolation second and third-round matches, eventually the team finishing in second place, 25 points behind winner Derby (193.5 to 168.5).

KELLY COLLEEN LONG

Satanta - Kelly Colleen Long, 60, died February 24, 2023 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal. She was born on August 8, 1962 in Garden City, the daughter of Bob and Margaret (Hurtt) Routh, Sr. Kelly spent her childhood in Garden City, where she attended school. On May 29, 1982, she married Bruce Long in Garden City. The couple made their home first in Sublette and later in Satanta. Kelly owned several businesses, including the Satanta Drive-In and the Pizza Shack. She also was a massage therapist for many years. Kelly enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Ed Phillips of Satanta; three children, Lisa Wood and husband Justin of Meade, Brandon Long and wife Maggie of Alton, and Megan Day and husband Zach of Liberal; two step-children, Sumar Rhea of Dodge City and Andy Phillips and wife Amber of Goodland; father, Bill Martin and wife Venetta of Morrilton, Arkansas; siblings, Bob Routh, Jr. and wife Leigh of Garden City, SueAnn Hunnicutt and wife Robin of Monet, Missouri, Jack Martin of Morrilton, Arkansas, Lee Routh and wife Anita of Garden City, and Mike Martin of Arkansas; 11 grandchildren, Kiara and Monte Long, Teagen, Hayden, and Willa Wood, Lane and Shank Day, Mattyson and Joslyn Scheck, and Gabriel Phillips.

STEVEN EDWARD KRAUS

Steven Edward Kraus (57), of Redmond, Washington, passed away on February 21, 2023, with complications from his heart. Steven, fondly known as Steve was born to Sharon and Edward Kraus on August 3, 1965, in Garden City, Kansas. He was a talented musician who received many awards for playing the saxophone. Throughout his life he was driven by his love of the arts and technology. This led him to a 25-year career at Microsoft where he received many awards and accolades including living in Bangalore, India opening the 1st campus. Steve’s main priority in life were his children. He was their number one fan, always there for them, whether he was pulling pranks, teaching them a life lesson, or to offer his love, support, and encouragement.
