Ingalls and Meade High Schools’ volleyball teams saw their hopes of a state championship come to an end Friday in the pool play portion of different state tournaments. LAWRENCE Sometimes, it is difficult to assess just how one sporting event actually went for a team. Perhaps that is one way to describe the Garden City High School boys’ and girls’ cross county teams following their performance at the Class 6A state championship in Lawrence at Rim Rock Farm. The Buffs’ boys, with sights set on a top three team finish, and senior Devin Chappel eyeing a top five individual finish, came up just short of those goals as the Buffs placed fifth in the team standings with 127 points and Chappel was seventh individually with a time of 15:58.8. Comparatively, in 2021, at Augusta’s 4-Mile Creek Resort, Chappel was fourth individually and the Buffs’ team placed 10th. Shawnee Mission East won both the team title with 65 points and the individual crown by Wyatt Haughton, who ran a stunning 14:59.7 time, believed to be the first sub-15 minute race at Rim Rock by a high school runner. Then, about an hour after the boys ran over the difficult Rim Rock layout of the 5-kilometer race, the girls’ squad took off and eventually placed eighth among the 12 competing teams, a big step forward from their 12th place standing in 2021.
The Stanton County High School girls’ and the South Gray High School girls’ cross country teams each claim the state team championships for the 2022-23 school year. For the Trojans, this is the squad’s fourth consecutive team title in its domination of Class 2A while for the Rebels, its their first title in the program’s history in Class 1A.
IOWA FALLS, IOWA Talk about a tale of two halves. Travis Dixon ran for a career-high 206 yards and two touchdowns, the defense forced three turnovers, and Garden City Community Colege flipped an eightpoint halftime deficit into a 69-35 route of Ellsworth Saturday afternoon at Cadet Field. The Broncbusters improved to 4-5 overall heading into their regular-season finale vs. Coffeyville on Nov. 12. “We let this team hang around way too long,” GCCC Head Coach Tom Minnick said after the game. “And, we made way too many mistakes.” Those miscues had Garden City staring up at a 22-7 first-quarter deficit. After Ty Perry put the Broncbusters in front with a beautiful 75yard touchdown pass to Martiel Singleton on Garden City’s opening possession, the Panthers answeredwith22straight points. Joshua Bauer hit Aghogho Eyafe for a 53yard touchdown before Perry telegraphed a pass on an out route that was intercepted by Jeremiah Gill and returned 67 yards for a score.

The Edith Scheuerman Tigerrific Sign Choir is inviting veterans to a music program at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11. The program will be held in the school’s gym, 1901 Wilcox. Refreshments will be served after the program. The Edith Scheuerman Tigerrific Sign Choir is collaborating up with the Kansas Kruisers to make the event truly memorable. The Kansas Kruisers are offering all veterans a cool ride to the school as part of the program. Veterans will meet at the old Pizza Hut parking lot (corner of Taylor and Campbell) and pick a car to ride in. The car that they pick to ride in will take the veteran to the school and back to their vehicle after the program.
