Hector Fierro, dressed as Freddy Kruger, left, gives “high fives” to those collecting candy as they pass by Saturday night during the annual Kansas Kruisers Trunk n’ Treat on Main Street, in downtown Garden City. This was the first year for the group to hold the event on Main Street, with 50 vehicles participating to hand out candy. Approximately 6,000 area residents turned out for the event, which blocked off the street from Fulton Street north to Pine Avenue. More sights from the event can be found on page A4 of today’s Telegram. BRAD NADING/GARDEN CITY TELEGRAM
When the Garden City Buffaloes scored on their first two possessions of Friday night’s Week 9 bracket game against the Campus Colts, it appeared the expected rout might have just started. After all, with a 14-0 lead, and the Buffs’ defense having shut down the Colts’ version of the Flexbone offense on their first two drives, it looked like the Buffs had found their combination offense/defense to take control.

NEW YORK (AP) — When Wilfredo Molina arrived in the U.S. from his native Venezuela, he told border agents he wanted to go to Miami but didn’t have an address. They directed him to what he thought was a shelter in midtown Manhattan but turned out to be a gray office building. “It was a fake building. I didn’t understand what it was,” he said. Molina was among 13 migrants who recently arrived in the U.S. who agreed to share documents with The Associated Press that they received when they were released from U.S. custody while they seek asylum after crossing the border with Mexico. The AP found that most had no idea where they were going — nor did the people at the addresses listed on their paperwork.
AL B UQUERQUE , N.M. (AP) — An environmental group is suing U.S. wildlife managers, saying they have failed to protect a rare grouse found in parts of the Midwest that include one of the country’s most prolific areas for oil and gas development. A lawsuit filed Tuesday by the Center for Biological Diversity says the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is nearly five months late in releasing a final rule outlining protections for the lesser prairie chicken. Once listed as a threatened species, the prarie chicken’s habitat spans parts of New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas -- including a portion of the oil-rich Permian Basin that straddles the New Mexico-Texas state line.
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — After the final seconds ticked away on No. 22 Kansas State’s comprehensive 48-0 win over ninthranked Oklahoma State on Saturday, thousands of purpleclad fans didn’t storm the field so much as they wandered onto it in celebration. Which was altogether fitting, considering the way the Wildcats methodically trounced the Cowboys. Backup quarterback Will Howard threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns, Deuce Vaughn ran for 158 yards and another score, and a late interception by the Wildcats sealed Oklahoma State’s first shutout loss since 2009 while allowing Kansas State to remain a game behind TCU in the race for berths in the Big 12 championship game.
