Astros’ offseason involves Baker contract, free agents after series win

HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros may have won their second World Series in six years and been a consistent presence in the playoffs, but there are a lot of questions the team will need to address in the offseason. Manager Dusty Baker and general manager James Click aren’t yet under contract. Several top players are free agents. Despite all of this, oddsmakers still expect the Astros to be one of the favorites to win it all next season. FanDuel Sportsbook has the team with the second-best odds to win the 2023 World Series behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 73-year-old Baker won his first title in his 25th season as a major league manager Saturday night when the Astros dispatched Philadelphia in six games. He’s not thinking of calling it quits, even if he is the oldest manager to ever win a title. “I’ve always said if I win one, I want to win two,” he said. When pressed about his contract status and the future, Baker interjected and said things weren’t uncertain on his end.

Three Broncbusters named to All-Jayhawk volleyball team

It was a massive turnaround season for the Garden City Community College volleyball team in the 2022-23 season, and on Monday, the rest of the conference took notice. Middle blocker, Kate Perryman, outside hitter Fiona Arnold, and right side Jelena Milovanovic were named to the All- Jayhawk team. “It’s always nice to get postseason recognition, but I promise that all three of these young women would give it up to still be playing and getting ready to head to Missouri right now,” GCCC Head Coach Patrick Hiltz said. Perryman, who transferred in from the Air Force Academy, may go down as one of the best players to come through Garden City in two decades. The freshman, who appeared in 25 matches, broke the school record with 107 blocks, good for sixth in the country and 27th in the nation. She also finished fourth on the team with 151 kills and had 54 digs. “Kate was about as dominant a force as we’ve had in several years in the middle this season,” Hiltz added. “Even though her offensive numbers may not have been where she wanted them to be, Kate affected every game she played in for us with her defense and even developed a serve that kept opponents off balance.”

What’s at stake in concussion case against NCAA?

The NCAA has been defending itself in court against a lawsuit brought by a former college football player’s widow, who accuses the governing body of being responsible for the concussions that led to her husband’s death. Matthew Gee died at age 49 in 2018 from permanent brain damage caused by countless blows to the head he took while playing linebacker for Southern California from 1987-91, according to the wrongful death suit filed by Alana Gee.

Davis’ triple double sparks Broncbuster rout Tuesday

Taya Davis joined elite company on Tuesday night. The freshman posted a triple double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, Jae’Mya Lyons grabbed a gamehigh 18 rebounds, and Garden City Community Colege routed Kansas Wesleyan Junior Varsity, 88-39, at Conestoga Arena. “We still have to execute on certain things, but overall, we played pretty well,” GCCC Head Coach Antwain Scales said. “Taya was great. She got her teammates involved, and she’s the catalyst for what we’re trying to do.” How good was Davis? Her 11 rebounds were almost as many as the entire starting lineup combined for Kansas Wesleyan (17). She logged 36 minutes, added three steals and had two blocks.
