Holcomb 78, Colby 34

At Colby, the visiting Holcomb Longhorns steamrolled the Colby Eagles 78-34.

The Longhorns were down by eight at the end of the first period, 16-8. Holcomb head coach Chad Novack said he felt his team played well — except for the slow start.

“Played pretty well — for the most part. Started off a little slow tonight but really turned it on in the second quarter,” Novack said. “Played pretty well from there on.”

The Longhorns indeed “turned it on” in the second period as they exploded for 31 points. Novack said he felt that his team merely turned up the intensity to have such a strong second period.

“I thought we just kind of turned up the intensity another notch,” Novack said. “The kids really got after it on the defensive side of the floor.”

The Longhorns did not lose any momentum after halftime as they came right back out in the second period and scored over 20 points again, this time scoring 23.

For Colby, Ashton Russ led the team with 10 points.

Even winning by such a large margin, Novack said he still felt that his team could improve.

“We still have to work on the little things,” Novack said. “We stress those in practice every single day. We just have to do a better job of doing those little things every single possession, instead of every other possession.”

Holcomb’s next game is against Cimarron on January 6, and Novack said he feels that his team needs to continue to improve to win their next game.

“We just have to continue to improve and work hard in practice,” Novack said.
