A successful spring 2010 tennis season hopes to get even better on Friday and Saturday when the Ulysses boys sends its top singles player and doubles team to the Class 4A state tournament in Pratt.

"We're excited about qualifying both singles and doubles," Ulysses coach Rocky Meyer said. "They've all had good seasons and this is a great reward."

Singles player Austin Cotherman enters state with a 24-4 record, finishing second at last week's regional behind an unbeaten Smoky Valley player and a third place finisher at state a year ago. Cotherman has victories over previously unbeaten Brandon Katt of Trego Community-WaKeeney and a 6-4 win over Liberal's Duc Nguyn, who won the WAC title two weeks ago.

The doubles team of Bryce Lubbers and Victor Rivera will take a 21-5 record to state after placing third at the 4A regional. Their lone loss at the regional came against Smoky Valley's duo that placed second at the state tourney a year ago. Their third-place finish was secured with a victory over Pratt's doubles squad for the second time this season.

The meet will begin at 11 a.m.
