Cimarron High School graduate Spence Byer believes in hard work, as evidenced by his 4.0 grade-point average and participation in athletic and academic competitions. But the recent graduate likes to let loose sometimes, too.
"I'm a normal teen," he wrote in a questionnaire he provided to The Telegram. "I like to chill with my pals. I also like to crank the electrical guitar to 10 and play gigs with my band."
But back to the academics.
"I really liked speech. It gave me a chance to make the class laugh," Byer wrote.
His least favorite high school subject was English IV.
"It was boring," he said.
He made the Hi-Plains league scholars bowl team all four years, finished sixth in the state at the scholars bowl in 2009 and was the second leading scorer in 2008 and 2009 and third lead scorer last year.
Byer was state solo in instrumental music in 2008 and 2009 with a "I" rating. In 2010, he had a "II" rating on his state solo. All the while, he's never been off the honor roll.
He's been on the Student Council all four years. He has played football (two years) and basketball (one year) and ran track (two years).
Byer wrote that his most memorable moment in school was "all of the crazy things I've done for my friends."
He advised those entering high school to, "Get involved. Even if it's something you think you may hate, try it anyway. You won't regret it."
And he said to those like him who recently graduated from high school this spring: "Hard work will get you anything you want in life."
He plans to attend Creighton University.
"I want to be remembered as a hard worker," Byer wrote in his questionnaire.
