Ingalls High School's Kayla Wehkamp graduated with a straight 4.0, was the valedictorian of her class, won the Kansas State University Dean's Award for Science and Math and was the Kansas Board of Regents State Scholar among a host of other academic awards. And, she is a rabid football fan."Although I do not have an athletic bone in my body," she wrote in a questionnaire provided to The Telegram. "I really enjoy following collegiate and professional sports. Football is my absolute favorite, and the University of Michigan is my favorite team. Something about the history and prestige just draws me in!"
She attended Ingalls schools from kindergarten through 12th grade.
"I participated in cheerleading for three years," Wehkamp wrote. "I was also involved in KAY Club, serving as president my senior year. I was also the President of our NHS Club as a senior. ... I was the vice president for I-Club (Letterman's Club) and twice served as the secretary for our student council. I participated in band all four years, acting as drum majorette my senior year. I participated in choir three years."
Her favorite classes were math, science and choir.
"Classes that involve writing are not typically on the top of my list," she wrote.
She said she had so many memorable moments in high school, but they all involved "just being with her friends."
Her advice to incoming freshmen: "Make the most of your time in high school. ... Don't take these four years for granted!"
For her fellow graduates: "I have no better advice for them than they have for me; we are all on even ground again and must work our way up from the bottom, whether it be starting off as a freshman in college or at the bottom of the totem pole at work. I guess the best advice for that situation would be we must work our very hardest in order to give ourselves the best chance to succeed."
She plans to attend Kansas State University and major in biological systems engineering.
Wehkamp wants her fellow graduates to remember her as a person who "doesn't give up easily."
